In Influence Part 1, I wrote about how my fellow corps members and I needed to uproot weeds and how I failed at the first attempt. I explained a bit further that – the failure was caused by ignorance, and until I gave learning a chance, I never handled the axe better. As much as I’d love to keep writing about it, the real fun is always in the full content, so go ahead and check out Influence Part 1.
Now, for this part, I’ve saved the juiciest bit for last! So, grab your seat, get comfy, and let’s dive right in!
The How that Shapes “When”
In our world, there’s a widespread desire to make a powerful impact, but only a few are willing to understand the systems that make it possible and sustainable. And, this is why I’ve decided to walk you through the effect “your how” has on your actions. Many instances can be shared but let’s have that of Mirabel.
In the Year 2023, I knew Mirabel. “Saying I knew her didn’t mean we’d just crossed paths; it meant I was finally seeing the real her.” And guys! She’s a masterpiece in motion! Mirabel was that driven soul who was eager to create and own businesses that not only fulfill societal needs but also leave a lasting, significant impact. With the volume her desire speaks, she could have the empires built in a day. Her vision shone so brightly that it illuminated her entire face.
Bhiholuee! “a feminine voice blared”
OMG! “Even if my ears were being worked on at the moment, trust me, I was still gonna figure out that the voice was Mirabel’s – She had this awkward way of calling out my name”.
“Her Excellency, ma’am. Your girl is at your service. How can I be of help to you.” I replied.
“What’s with the formality? Madam abeg pull your ears here. There are some weighty gist I’ve got for you.” Mirabel snapped and pressed on. “I don’t even need your permission to speak. So, listen: I was walking down the road along that Haven crescent, and I saw this gigantic building. Chill oh! All my life, I have envisaged a lot of amazing buildings, but this gripped my heart. To crown it all, it’s a business empire and I think I love it.”
“You and buildings ehn. Especially business empires. Alright, so what do you think about it?” I asked.
She said, “Honestly, I just want to make a ton of money and build my own. Period!”
“Ah ah ah!” The sarcastic laugh cut through the air. That’s when it hit me that some lady had been eavesdropping the whole time.
Mirabel asked “Aunty nah, why did you laugh like that? Was it not money that was used to build the empire?
(I was surprised to see Mirabel’s aunt sitting in the nook. But hey, let’s see how this conversation unfolds!)
“My love,” The lady(Aunty) said while she pulled her chair towards us. “Yes, you are absolutely correct! The empire, as in the physical structure, was built with money, but what sustains its functionalities is beyond just the money. Alright, let’s have a quick test; as an aspiring business owner, I would give you just 100 thousand naira, but before that, can you give me a brief of how you will manage the money?” Aunty said.
“Ermm. One hundred thousand naira is quite small to achieve anything because, for me, I would rather build the empire first before thinking of what to do”. Mirabel responded.
Aunty chuckled and said, “Darling Mirabel, as I mentioned earlier, money isn’t just what sustains an empire but, the system, the people and most importantly, the knowledge that empower them”. Also, I see a strong desire in you to truly influence the business world in a powerful way and that is inspiring. Just remember, lasting influence comes from fully understanding the systems that make it possible. Some strategies make businesses work; the ownership and managerial game. Without any of these, you will just have buildings with no unshakable root – knowledge.
“Really, Aunty?” Mirabel asked with a sigh.
“Yes, my dear.” Aunty said with a nod, then continued.. You must be able to understand what makes the business empire firm; clear long term-visions, strong cash flow, customer satisfaction and more.
Also, this isn’t just applicable to the business sector but every other. I mean, whether Government, Art, Education, or Religion, there’s always a way in with a “how” that backs it up. Engaging with the right tools, the right insights, and the right path truly do matter! And, when you let go of that, failure is inevitable.
“Yikes! Hope your friend doesn’t think I hijacked you! Let’s call it a wrap for now—I’ll set up a date, and we’ll keep the convo rolling. Till then, stay sharp, Tycoon!”
With a soft smile, Aunty gently brought the conversation to a close.
